In this, the third part of our series on how you can use a Shuttle XPC and Linux to replace your beige-tower and Windows, we will be looking at a variety of different applications that hopefully complete the basic functionality you require from your home computer.  We will look at some more essential applications for your Linux machine, including a reliable and easy to use method for backing up and restoring your dual-boot machine, various CD-burning applications, DVD ripping, scanning under Linux and how to configure your multimedia keyboard so that all those extra keys come to life.


If you are new to Sudhian Media, then you may wish to first read Part I and Part II of the series.  Part I addressed the installation of Linux, configuring your sound, graphics and network, email client and instant messenger.  Part II went a little further, looking at mounting a Windows disk under Linux, compiling a new kernel, playing CD’s and MP3 files and watching DVD’s and other digital movie formats.
